A Piece
Pope Jane
It's just as if the fog above the mountains
Had breath made of white lace
And all along the tree line laid a vapor
That was frozen into place
Mountain after mountain squeezed the road
Tight between their knees
And you and I went riding by
With our car packed tight full of all our memories
We leave a piece of ourselves behind
Stationed like sentries to stand for all time
We leave a ripple where we have jumped in
Rolling like water where races begin
We leave a breath lingering in our space
When breathed by another will light a new face
We are the product of sparks between lovers
Why do we buy that we don't affect others?
The winter cold rolled in and it seemed to fit
The day the old man's body quit
The American Legion stood at attention
Ankle deep at the brittle snow-lined pit
Twenty one guns, a folded flag
I did not recognize those men that day
But a flashing in their aging eyes
Showed me just where my grandpa would stay
We leave a piece of ourselves behind
Stationed like sentries to stand for all time
We leave a ripple where we have jumped in
Rolling like water where races begin
We leave a breath lingering in our space
When breathed by another will light a new face
We are the product of sparks between lovers
Why do we buy that we don't affect others?
Why do we buy that we don't affect others?
Why do we buy that we don't affect others?
Why do we buy that we don't affect others?
