Back Into the Woods
Ed Harcourt
She wears a thinly veiled contempt
It only serves his swift descent
Back into the woods again
With his tail between his legs
They found him babbling by a brook
Tearing pages from the holy book
He claimed to be some kind of mortal god
who could save the world from doom
But the wrath of Mother Nature
Will overwhelm him in the end
For those creatures, they have no hands to lend
If he goes back into the woods again
Seductive mystery is dead
She suffers visions of St Bernadette
There's mercury in the city pipes
As he scales her fire escape
He sleeps reclined at the edge of her bed
She hears the wheels faintly spin in his head
He looks so peaceful with both eyes closed
Maybe the woods are a better place
But the wrath of Mother Nature
Will overwhelm him in the end
For those creatures, they have no hands to lend
If he goes back into the woods again
Old Father Time so ravaged
& his hourglass is spent
So she offers him a sweet lament
Please don't go back into the woods again
I'm going back into the woods.
