Having My Picture Made
Tom Flannery
I'm having my picture made
so I can look back and say
I looked like that once
and I once felt that way
I'm having my picture made
because words can't tell
the way the eyes can see
the souls of men that fell
I'm having my picture made
I'm having my picture made
so the Lord can see
just what he was missing
the day that he judged me
put me on a mantle
where the kids can see
and they can ask "who is that man
looking back at me"
I'm having my picture made
break:
sing for me a sad lament
for my child a lullabye
and then I'll rest my weary head
and re-learn how to cry
I'm having my picture made
to bring me back home
out of the killing fields
where I lie all alone
I'm having my picture made
as a testament to war
and a fervent prayer to not forget
those who've come before
so I'm having my picture made
