Ice Maiden
Julia Darling
Not out of snow or rain frozen
Not out of any of nature's gifts
I made an ice maiden
But it was the lonely freak
Walking in my head
That first shaped and loved him
Later when cocksure it moves
Through pubs and rooms
And stops to glance at her
It means nothing clear
Only those who surround it
Sees for what they are
You missed the sunflowers at their height,
Came back when they were bent and worn
And the gnats, half-froze, fell one by one
Into the last of the sprawling marigolds.
Sleeping beside you I dreamt I woke
Dreamt I woke beside you
Waking beside you I thought I'm
Thought I'm only dreaming
Sleeping beside you I dreamt I woke
Dreamt I woke beside you
Waking beside you I thought I might
Thought I might be dreaming
