When August came around livin' in my new town
I had made so many new friends

Had even started our own band
We played our first and last show in Marty's brother's garage
And I was so afraid to sing that I turned up the reverb
And I hid behind the bass stand so that no one could see me
Well, that band didn't last and August went fast
And fall was fallin' quick on me
And some love affairs are too bad to remember
Some stories too sad to sing
Well, careful what you kiss because you might miss
The best years of your life
And if someone cries when you say you're not into them
After you've only known 'em for one night
Then my advice is run away, run away, no, don't make my mistake

Now don't get me wrong, no it wasn't all bad
Sometimes I thought it was love but didn't know what that was
Now how could we know when we were only that old
And how could we treat each other so bad for so long?
Now the years would go by like a big horsefly
And we would try to be nice and we'd fight and fight
And if I could I would go back in time
And I would just let her cry, cry, cry
The lease was up and I hadn't thought that far
So I ended up movin' into my car
And then my friend Darren Glenn moved in
And I would spend my days hangin' out in the park
And I would drive him work and go kill time at the mall
Shoplifting anything cool I saw
An hour later I'd go back and pick him up
I was waitin' for a change of luck
When it got cold we moved into the same little room
Into a house full of people that we didn't know
This was up on Cottage Grove
Things were gonna change pretty soon
