The Peasant Dramatic
When you hacked out of the forest, your hat was green, your head was going soft
With my silver veins and rusty brain, I didn’t even know what you were called
But what with your talking monkey and your infinite kindness, it wasn’t long till we were all enthralled
Now holding prisms to her eyes, I mean, you buy her pretty things, so I have heard
You get so excited when she prophesies, I think once you even said a word
And if I hadn’t been studying morbid psychology, of course I wonder if any of this would have occurred
Though your bones are red and hers are white, I know you’re very nice to her and all
I mean, I heard you making love with her, you picked a spot right up against my wall
I mean, mostly I went out sleepwalking, what with you two having such a ball!
Until she found me by the trains in the morning I’d been running much too fast
She bent down for her keys and said, It’s no good to dwell on what is past
She wouldn’t follow you at first, but I know she’s been very happy since you fixed her up at last
Some birds are on a wire, some diamonds have been dropped upon the sill
Their colors spread on everything, and they will hold you safe and hold you still
So if I won’t be her wrecking ball, at least I know that somebody will
