Respective Coasts

Craig Finn
Heather hadn't thought about the incident for years
She said at most maybe once or maybe twice
Kevin's seeing someone that he met through friends at work
And he finally found a place he really likes
Heather hates the movies about that New York City
Leaves a bad taste in her mouth
Makes her anxious, makes her nervous
She can't quite forgive him, but she can't quite let him go
She can't see him in person
They still talk on the phone
They built a love up then in broke
Retreated back to their respective coasts
Kevin says it's not really an accident
It seems to him she pretty much did it to herself
Heather says she's better now
She's back in California
She feels like she can breathe again
She's focused on her health
Kevin said he's sorry that it ended up a mess
He's still got a couple things
He'd like to get up off his chest
She moved west without telling him
But then she sent a note
She can't see him in person
But they still talk on the phone
They built a love up but it broke
Retreated back to their respective coasts
And if you're calling from New York
Anytime up to 3AM is fine
I usually go to bed around midnight, Pacific Standard Time
Kevin said he might be getting married
And he's sorry, but he thought she’d like to hear it straight from him
And he knows it happened quickly,
But 6 months isn't nothing
She's invited, but he understands if she don't wanna come
Heather just said nothing,
She just looked right out her window
At the mountains and the ocean and the shoreline and the birds
She's old enough to know that it doesn't always work
But you never get so old it doesn't hurt
They built a love up but it broke
Retreated back to their respective coasts.
Hey Kevin, Hey Heather, you can't hold on forever (x8)
They build a love up and it broke
