Twenty-Three (Remix)

I know these kids,
And they love to get high,
Probably to try escape the same things that I,
Have battled with,
And now steamed into our psyche,
At one point or another we're all convinced that we might be,
Just a tad bit broken,
And only hear the bad even when good things are spoken,
We find solace and find patterns in bottles,
And a lot of us become the demons that we can't abolish,
So we apply the polish,
Put up a front that say's we're okay,
But in reality we're demolished,
See there's a lot of different ways to kill yourself,
While some of them are blatant others are hidden well,
And when your family can't tell,
And it's you against the world,
But your whole world's a living hell,
And if you're anything like me then you've gotta known that you're not alone,
And we've all been twenty-three.
[Chorus]
And I wish that you hadn't done it,
Could have won it and moved on from it,
Now we'll never grow old together,
But you're in my memories...

Remix!
I wrote this song four years ago,
A lot of healing has taken place since then,
A girl in London told me that her boyfriend took his life,
He was twenty-three,
I said it hurts but it's alright,
I told her not to worry,
He'd be up in Heaven waiting,
I don't have the answers,
But listen this is all I'm sayin',
I've seen the demons too,
They wanna take me down,
I felt the darkness closing in like no one is around,
I've battled with this feeling even though I keep it quiet,
I miss my homie Pat,
And I can't deny it,
I've wrestled with the guilt like maybe it was all my fault,
And so I write these songs,
Because it's all I've got,
It's such an honor rocking mics with Science every night,
Making music, touring Europe,
Keeping his memory alive,
We raised a grand for the AFSP,
Pat, I see you homie and I hope you're proud of me,
You said that rap was magic every time I did my vocal takes,
It's funny how the heart can heal, even when you've felt it break.
[Chorus]
And I wish that you hadn't done it,
Could have won it and moved on from it,
Now we'll never grow old together,
But you're in my memory,
As twenty-three.

"Ladies and gentleman, I want you to meet a good friend of mine, this is Patrick Wood"
"What's up, Lars?"
"What's up Pat?"
"How're you doin', man?"
"Good. What do you think about my recording equipment taking up three-quarters of our small room in the Kimble dorm?"
"It's no problem man, I love you."
"I love you too, Pat."
"Thanks, Lars."
"Pat Wood, hey, that's you!"
[Chorus]
And I wish that you hadn't done it,
Could have won it and moved on from it,
Now we'll never grow old together,
But you're in my memories.
And I wish that you hadn't done it,
Could have won it and moved on from it,
Now we'll never grow old together,
But you're in my memory,
As twenty-three
