Watching For the Light
David Lamotte
And suddenly it's five AM
After the songs and conversation
And what a holy night it's been
The mystery and revelation
And now I'm lying here alone
Swimming in sleepy contemplation
The music ringing in my bones
The scenes replay now as they will
The stories flowed and fingers fell
Along the strings that bind my memory
You seemed to see my sorrow well
And recognized a heart run empty
And now I'm watching for the light
A tired but dedicated sentry
I couldn't ask more of the night
Except to make it longer still
A song can soothe the savage breast
Or it can make a soldier heartless
But it's the song I love the best
That shines into the deepest darkness
And even when your strings were still
Your warmth and kindness left my heart blessed
My empty cup has been refilled
You have been music to me
