We Used to Think the Freeway Sounded Like a River
Richmond Fontaine
There was an abandoned house we lived next to
With a broken pool that we'd sit next to
It was full of shopping carts, a mattress, and old car parts
We'd goof around like it was our pool, you'd laugh and set your toes into
We'd watch the sun go down over the overpass where endless miles of cars would pass
We'd listen to the crooners croon and make drinks with a blender your mom gave to me and you
We came home one night and our door was open
Most of our things were gone or broken
All our clothes were thrown around the rooms and even our pictures were wrecked too
And the overpass where the endless miles of cars would pass, it hummed night and day and night and day
We used to think it sounded like a river, but all that slipped away that day
