First Nights

You Are Why I Sing
Just bend beneath the boughs.
Our clever forest house.
You were arriving from somewhere else,
But why can't I recall it?
Said we'd never meet again.
You looked hopeful said "that all depends,"
"On what," I asked, my face a mask.
Well you could stay the night I guess.
Slough off the morning dew.
Glad it didn't get to you.
Always try to be on cue.
Get the light just perfect I can match the hue.
You were caught up in the chase.
The night we'd spent our hearts did race.
Wish I had a pretty face,
So it wouldn't be so hard to talk to you.
Must be prone to midnight frights,
Broken toes, and blinding bathroom lights.
You couldn't sleep again--
I vowed to you and you just had that grin"¦
Never gonna' be without,
A broken horse and a heavy plow.
Think that I'd get used to you,
If you'd get used to me.
What's the point of lying then?
If every single thing we share's a sin.
I ditch my morals--
I'll grab them when we have that time to quarrel.
Make no sound,
Dump the water "˜til the fire's out.
I agree,
I'm full of sympathy.
Things get hard,
I'll show you where I am when it gets dark.
And you can call me,
I'll be right beneath the maple tree.
