Playing Peter
Sister City
You can find me playing Peter from a perch
From the parapet that overlooks my church
But my gate is locked, the pearls don't shine
Cause I'm playing peter in my mind
I dot my Is and cross my t's
When I write down what peter sees
But I still find it hard to read
And I don't remember what I mean
What drove you out were ringing bells
What floated up were angry yells
What drifted down you barely heard
The sound of my ungrateful words
So I engage in thievery
Like art could save a wretch like me
The greatest judge in history
Makes Solomon look awfully weak
Couldn't I adjust my gait
And finally start thinking straight
I can't be right, I must be wrong
But the proof has been there all along
I lost faith in people years ago
So the future finds me growing old
A notebook spread across my desk
Me playing peter once again
