The Story, Rewritten
Good Luck
Had one hot cup of tea
and too much time to think
so I rewrote the story of us.
Where I spoke eloquently
and you responded gently
to the use of my soft language.
But I still wore brown and blue
and my curly head of red was stylish.
All the drunk men and the cool kids
step aside with Kurt (?)
were humming like cicadas for us.
Can't escape the feeling that I've done this one before
on the elevator taking me up to the top of the garage
playing tapes from the boom box til the night turns to morning again.
When we were young and brave we shook off every rule.
Maybe in our faith we acted like a fool.
Now there's shades of gray to everything we do.
How I long for something that would make me feel like there's only one answer.
Now I skip to foolish fumbling when I hear your name.
And if this comes to nothing then it's all the same.
After so much waiting it's a welcome change.
Had two hot cups of tea
and too much time to think
so I rewrote the story of us.
Where I spoke eloquently
and you responded gently
to the use of my soft language.
Now there's nothing left to say
it feels empty in your place.
And I know I lost my chance
this is where we'll always stand.
I never
did nothing
to move me towards you.
