A Different Kind of Ground
Brock Zeman
There she is out on the highway
She's got her thumb stuck in the air
She don't know where she's headed
She don't look like she cares
She ain't all that pretty
She kinda looks a little plain
Her eyes look like a sky
That's all clouding up with rain
And she knows that you can't get far
On ninety bucks and fifty cents
But try telling that to her suitcase
Because in her mind she's already left
Maybe she's just gone awhile
Another place, another town
Maybe just to feel her feet
On a different kinda ground
Maybe she's just gone to where
Nobody knows her name
Maybe she said: Screw it all,
I ain't never coming back again
I see her out sometimes
Outside the bars along Main
She's a lady of the night
Folks call her all sorts of names
I say hello when I walk by sometimes
But I never get a reply
You can't expect much from a woman
Who's shown no kindness in her life
She always kinda looks away
With both her eyes turned down
Must be hard to live that kinda life
And still hold your head up proud
She didn't tell no one she was leaving
And no tears fell from her eyes
No one wished her any kind of luck
And nobody waved good-bye
I'll bet a car pulled onto the shoulder
And stopped to give her a ride
I'll bet she pause a spell and looked back to town
Before she hopped inside
And I'll bet she whispered under her breath
As the driver rushed her along:
You can all kiss my ass good-bye
And just like that she was gone
