Scarecrow Blues
A mean sun beating down on me day in and day out
I'm just a straw effigy of that I've got no doubt
A head full of hay and a tattered old robe
It sure ain't no dancing down no yellow brick road
Someday soon when the field is all cleared
Down off this cross I'll come till next year
My only company for miles wide and far
Is this dirty old black crow perched up here on my arm
I try and I try but if the damn thing don't move
I'll be out of a job this coming June
Sometimes in life you lace up your dancing shoe's
Sometimes you just sway to the scarecrow blues
When my job here's through I want those coal black crows carry me
Piece by piece and high above those old lonesome oak tree's
Scatter my body around and let an autumn wind carry me to the ground
It's straw to dirt and dirt to weeds and I'll be back again you'll see.
The farmer's got a brand new shirt
And it's the sharpest thing that I've ever seen
The old one is all covered in dirt
And it's busting out at the seams
His old lady's gonna stitch it up and stuff it full of straw
They're gonna rip my insides out and scatter me around the stalls
Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose
Sometimes you just sway to the scarecrow blues
And how sweet a sound it is to hear them blades cutting them stalks at the ground
I'm kinda sad to see them go when the wind gets tangled in them they make such a sound
But they too must go just like the years there ain't no use crying no salty tears
You can try and hold on to something but there really ain't no use
So hold your empty arms wide and sway to the scarecrow blues
