North West Arm

Daniel Johns
V1/ It's a long way I've travelled to nowhere
and my dreams they unravel in time
to ride the warm wind in the lonely high gum trees
in the blue of the soft summer sky
in the blue of the soft summer sky.
V2/ Sutherland's five miles up the serene North West Arm
there's the school and the places I knew,
where I lived and I cried the lost love I denied in
frosty mornings scratchin' firewood from the dew,
for a fuel stove softly simmerin' winter stew.
bridge...Grandma lives nextdoor in an old fibro house
a straggly hedge growin' up thru the lines,
she's eighty this year and the love of the family
and the backyard's overgrowin' ivy vines
nd she tells me of her life and never minds.
V3/ The westerlies in summer are scortching
we've had bushfire smoke choke out the haze
in the winter you tramp icy winds chilled and damp in
cutting cold of the sun's crystal rays.
V4/I can hear the cicidas in the trees near our house
and the shimmerin' river's soft sounds
of the dogs and the children in splashing
on the water through sandstone high ground...
you can hear the kurrawongs swooping down
you can hear the kurrawongs swooping down...ahhhh
